I have been asked by the BBC to supply a weekly column/blog for the BBC Sport Scotland website. This is a fantastic opportunity for Shinty to get some national weekly coverage, so please have a read and you can leave your comments on the relating topics and subjects if ya fancy.

What a start

Well what a great start to the year so far. A few days in Morocco then back to Shanghai and Kazakhstan for 3 weeks.

A huge thank you to Carole and Jodie from the Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai for another unforgettable trip. We stayed and played in the Grand Hyatt 6* hotel, voted last years 2nd best business hotel in the World. With the lobby on the 53rd floor and our bedrooms on the 73rd, It was quite an experience.

A massive thank you as always to Andy MacKinnon, Neil Brody and all the lads and lassies in KZ. This year saw us all fly over to Aktau and Atyrau. The final figure is not in for the money raised but if it's anything like previous years it will be $100,000 region for both.

Can't thank you all enough for your hard work and the opportunity to perform in such an undiscovered country to raise money for the orphans.

Happy New Year

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL

We brought the bells in again this year with the only street party to last the Highlands weather, in Drumnadrochit. A fantastic night and thank you very much for everyone who supported the event, withstood the cold, to the committee, and a huge thank you must go to Dola for organizing this fantastic Hogmanay from our end.

2009 was a another brilliant year for myself with amazing trips, concerts and festivals World wide. An up and down season with the shinty with injury and travels, but with a Camanachd winners medal and appointed Scotland captain, it certainly wasn't the worst season I've had.

Ewan and myself releasing the new album "Shouts" was a wee highlight for the year. It was great having an album to support our music after a 4 year break from "How's the Craic" and a huge thanks to everyone that has since bought the album.

I hope 2010 will be a fantastic year for you, and thank everyone of you for your continued support. I hope we get a blether and a bit of craic soon.

I have a few exciting projects in the pipeline so watch this space.

All the best, till we get the drams in.

Gary :)

Oz over so quickly

Unfortunately we had to cut our travels short in Oz due to unforeseen circumstances, but what a time we had when we were there. We drove the Great Ocean Road and went down as far as Port Campbell catching the 12 Apostles on our way. We then drove the full Hume highway in one day. All 880km between Melbourne and Sydney in 15 hours before a great weekend in the capital. A highlight of the trip had to be the Neighbours night in Melbourne. Now I'm a huge fan of the show, so was very excited to get along and meet some of the cast. We met Stew Parker, Donna Freedman, and the legend himself Dr Karl Kennedy. We had an amazing night and won 1st prize of $250 on the quiz. We gave the doc the new "Shouts" album, but it turned out he had it already ;)

Anywho, great to be home, and looking forward to Christmas and Santa coming next week. Hope you have all been good.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and an even better New Year.

Safe Travels
Gary :) x

Kuala Lumpur

A huge thank you to the lads and lassies who gave us such a good time in KL. We returned last week after a couple of great gigs and loads of craic. The Beach Bar being a highlight. Thank you especially to Rodger and Paul for looking after us so well and taking us for our very first Fish Spa. If you don't know what that is, it's when you put your feet in a tank of fish, and the fish eat all the dead skin off your legs and feet. A very weird feeling, and we couldn't stop laughing the whole way through.

Thanks again guys, and hope to see you all soon back home in Scotland :)

Poster boy X3

Well it's happened again. I've managed to get onto another cover of something. This time it's the 10 foot blackboard in Hootananny's, Inverness. I received an e-mail from Fiona a few weeks back asking if they could do a life sized caricature of me squeezing the wee purple fella. It look's brilliant and a great privilege to be in the busiest trad bar in the Highlands. Next time your in you can give me a wee wave, or better still leave me a dram behind the bar, and I'll get it next time I'm in haha. :)

Scotland Captain

When Fraser MacKenzie (Scotland manager) phoned me this week and asked If I would be the Scotland captain I was over the moon. I have been involved with the Scotland senior team since 2002 and have some amazing experiences. This is a huge honour and privilege for me and I greatly look forward leading the boys out on Oct 31st when me meet the Irish in Inverness. The match will also be live on BBC2 and Radio Scotland so hopefully many of you will manage to catch the big game.

C'mon Scotland :)

Camanachd Cup Champions 09

Well what can i say. What a game, What a finish, What a goal! Thanks haha.

If you never managed to catch Saturday's Camanachd Cup Final between Fort William and Kyles you missed probably the best game of Shinty in the past 10 years. After we (Fort William) went 3.0 up we witnessed an inspirational come back from Kyles in 7 MINUTES to level the score at 3.3 before big Jim Clark stroked the winner past Kenny MacDonald to bring the cup back home to the Fort. With the determination and desire that Kyles showed I know it wont be long before they have their hands on the trophy that we all play shinty to lift.

Well done again boys and surely we cant win it again next year.......

Can we? :)

Runrig at Scone

A huge thank you to everyone at the Runrig team office and the boys for making another out door concert unforgettable. To everyone who continues to support me when with the lads and all the craic we have I thank you all.

From Spean's happiest man.

End of Box Club Tour

Big huge thank you to everyone who came out and supported us during our 16 day BC tour. We had an amazing time with some up's and downs but lots more highs than lows. Some down's being the van getting broken into some up's getting stuck on Eigg but saved by Lachie Robertson and his sturdy fishing boat. The journey of a sick lifetime haha.

Thank you all again and hope to see you all soon.

Gary :)

New Album (Release Sping 09)

Yo,

Well very excited to be finished the duo album with Ewan (Dougal) Robertson which we hope to launch and have out by Easter. We have been down at Gran's Studios (Lammington, Lanarkshire) between November 08 and putting down the last track last night, so fingers crossed a quick mix and master and you should have it in your car or sitting on your coffee table shortly.

We had a few friends also joining us on the album but don't want to give to much away until you buy one haha.

Will keep you posted as to the release date and also where to purchase this fine piece of musical genius.

I wish :)

Kazakh Ceilidh Commando's

Well folks just returned from another amazing trip from the wonderful country of Kazakhstan. Yes the place Borat is from (high 5).

This year the oil companies had booked 5 of us to go out perform for 13 days from concerts, to schools mainly in Atyrau and Aksai with all proceeds going to the orphans. On the trip this year was Spud the piper, Martin O'Neill, Alec Dalgleish, Ewen Henderson and myself. I have not had the official figures raised between both trips but it's estimated at over $100,000 which is fantastic and will hopefully improve the quality of life that these children have.

I should say that in between all the driving gigging and making money for the charities we did manage a wee dram or two also.

Massive thank you to Andy, Annie, Davie, and all the rest of the boys and girls that looked after us so well.

Can't wait for next year already :)

Little Vegas

Well ladies and gentleman I am now the proud owner of my new custom box from Italy aptly named when you see him Little Vegas.

He's a 96 bass in a 72 size with black keys where they're normally white, and the black notes are gold the same as the box. I also got them to make two crossed camans in the the middle of the bellows, so when I open up you see the shinty's crossed and the ball above. Good craic.

Anyway hopefully you will get to see him very soon, and don't worry, the Wee Purple Fella is a little jealous, but still going strong.

Gary :)

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to everyone and a huge thank you to you all for another amazing year of continued support and great times.

There were many highlights in 2008 to name a few, Limo's, LA, San Francisco, Playing for the Royal family of Jordan in the Roman theatre Amman, winning the 101 Camanachd Cup, Runrig in Edinburgh Castle, and many brilliant festivals/concerts, International trips, and always the mischief on the way. Really couldn't of asked for much more.

I hope 2009 is a fantastic year for you also, and that our paths cross at some point this year and we manage a wee dram together.

Happy 2009 :)

Poster Boy x2

I was asked to go over to Edinburgh for some professional photo's for Scottish Southern Energy who sponsor so many different sports in Scotland. I was in my International Shinty strip and my Fort William strip getting photo's taken for promotional material that they will use over the next coming year or so.

After I was finished 5 monster rugby players stood up all kited up and were getting pictures taken for Edinburgh airport. So when you arrive in Scotland from January next year you will be met with huge bill boards of these rugby lads ready to tackle you. One of the guys had not shown up so they asked ME, the human pin, to be the missing man. They then take the picture and put a back drop behind us. It was brilliant fun having to look mean but giggling like a school girl surrounded by these Scottish Man Mountains.

Big huge thanks again to Scottish Southern Energy and Dougie Flowers for a great day, and for the second time in my life the chance to be the front cover of something I have nothing to do with haha.

I should add if you have a product and are looking for a lanky box player from Spean Bridge who likes to swing wood on the front cover of your product. IM YER MAN!!!

Gary :)

Start of a new album

Last week was spent down in Biggar, at Gran's studio where Ewan (Dougal) Robertson and myself started the album that we have talked about for 3 years. We had a very productive week, and as always plenty of laughs and carry on, well until the Hamond Organ caught fire that was.

Angus Lyon is producing the album which we are very happy about, but not so happy about the lack of smoke detectors in the studio (none) haha. We believe it may also be haunted, so if you hear some weird peculiar noises on the album, their not mistakes, just the dead giving us a wee song.

Will keep you all up to speed regarding a launch date in 2009.

Gary :)

The Reel Blend

I have been asked to be Robbie Shepherds special guest on his Reel Blend programme this Sunday. I have to pick 4 pieces of music, 2 of which I feature in, the other 2 of individuals or bands that have inspired me growing up.

The programme goes out live on BBC Radio Scotland 92-95fm or 810mv from 1pm, so if you get the chance to tune in and hear me stutter and splutter my way through, then that would be great.

Gary :)

Songs of Praise

Well it was lovely to get a phone call on Monday morning asking if I could be part of a band to film Songs of Praise in Linlithgow Church on Wednesday afternoon. We filmed 2 songs, one to be aired on the 30th November 08, the other to be shown in the spring time. I knew that Songs of Praise was very popular but after filming we were told that SoP gets watched by over 40 million viewers World wide, so hopefully 1% of the viewers will buy a CD hehe.

Big thank you to Greg De Blieck and everyone at the BBC for a great afternoon.

Camanachd Winners 08

Yeehaa

Well what a weekend. Winning the 101st Camanachd Final at home against the Kings will certainly be a highlight of this year. We certainly enjoyed our golden water on Saturday, and Sunday I can tell you. Huge thank you to everyone that phoned, text and messaged me on the run up to the game, and after for your lovely messages of support.

Hope I can catch up with you all soon, and give you a wee dram from the cup.

Gallop and Grind

Gallop and Grind is a charity event taking place on the 27th September 08 in Fort William. It's in aid of Sharon Fraser(39), who has been diagnosed with cancer, and wants to raise money for The Belford Hospital, and Raigmore's Oncology Ward in Inverness, as she feels they have helped her, and her family, immensely through this period, and at present.

I have known Sharon for many years now, through Feis Fort Augustus and other projects, and as sad as this news is, Sharon's inspirational attitude towards life, her family, and 4 children make this event all the more worth while.

The event starts between 11.30-12.15pm at Lochaber Leisure Centre, where you can choose to walk 3.5miles only or challenge yourself to walk 3.5 miles then cycle 9.5miles to the finish line. THIS IS NOT A RACE but by all means time yourself, or beat your friend to the end, but it's all meant to be fun and a great day out.
If you think you have what it take's to take part in this event, or can spare some money to this very worth while cause, then please contact MacPhee & Partners on 01397 701000.

There will also be a free ceilidh after the event in the Nevis centre. It starts around 7.30pm and also has a huge raffle, so if you cannot manage along during the day, then please get along at night.

Please check out www.nofussevents.co.uk for further information.

Thank you
Gary :)

Home Sweet Home

I arrived home from Jordan and America on Friday after 3 and a half weeks away. To say I had the time of my life would be an understatement, with limo's, 1st class flights, champagne all round, it was really quite an adventure.

I would like to thank Lorne for looking after me so well in LA, and for the tunes and great craic in the studio. John Robinson (big bro) John Pena, Walter Rodriguez, Mike Thompson, Danny O'Donnavan, Betsie Kamel and all the rest of the guys for an amazing experience, and of course Zade Dirani for inviting me to play with him in probably one of the finest settings in the World.

Last but certainly not least, a great big thank you to Mr and Mrs B (daddy+mummy america), all the NCCC guys (you know who you are) who each year make me feel very welcome and special in San Francisco. John Taylor and all at the Campbell games, I thank you all.

Until next time, I hope... :)

Air Miles :)

Heading off tomorrow to LA for a few days to do some recording with the World famous piper, Lorne Cousin. Lorne toured the globe with Madonna in 2004 with her Reinvention Tour, selling out stadiums all over the World. Then flying to Jordan to play with a Jordanian pianist called Zade Dirani, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The show is a World peace concert, and will be held in the Roman Theatre in the capital, Amman. The show will be aired live all over the Middle East, and as a PBS special in America. After the show I jump in a plane and head back to San Francisco to hook up with the NCCC guys, and perform in San Mateo.

So exciting times and the next few weeks, should be a blast.

Will tell you all the stories when I return ;)

Take the Floor.

Big huge thank you to everyone at Dornie Village Hall on Wednesday where Ewan Robertson and myself were recording 4 tracks for the ledgendary Robbie Shepherd's Take the Floor programme which gets aired on the 31st May 08 on Radio Scotland. Deoch'n Dorus were the ceilidh band of the evening and if you speak to Stuart make sure you don't use the same barber as he did before the broadcast. Cheeky begger.
Big thanks also to the man himself Rabbie and Jennifer (not allowed her sweeties) Cruickshank for great fun and carry on.

Enjoy :)

Britain's got Talent

Was in Berlin this week doing concerts for Live Music Now which were brilliant when I got a phone call from the production team of Britain's got Talent asking if I could audition on Saturday morning in the SECC Glasgow so got a cheap flight and came home a few days early. It was very funny and there were thousands of kids running around and even animals doing amazing tricks so certainly not expecting much from it but still brilliant fun none the less.

Runrig (Beat the Drum)

Just a huge thank you to Runrig and everyone who attended the Beat the Drum festival at Borlum Farm last weekend who gave me a very special night. Given the chance to play with such a prestiges band was one thing but in front of 17500 was just brilliant. Yes it was a shame it rained all day but everyone that I have spoken to since the event said they would do it all again in a heart beat. Would like to wish the boys the very best with their tour and hope they are supporting Fort William in this years Camanachd Cup Final haha :)

Britain's Strongest Man

I have been down in Minehead (Summerset) the past few days at the British Strongman Final where my little brother Goose was competing. The top 2 in each group then proceeded to the grand final which he did and in style. 7 English and 1 Scotsman stood tall and with the Saltire flag flying high above the crowd the young underdog looked awesome. This was it, with the Top 5 proceeding to the Worlds Strongest Man in Disney Land USA everyone looked mean, mighty and bloody massive.

After 2 grueling days and a torn muscle in his shoulder he finished 6th, just one place off a US trip. He had surpassed everyones expectations and did our country proud.

So if any of you see the big star make sure you buy him a pint as he hasn't had a drink in 9 months and a wheel barrow to get him home haha :)

Cmon the Goose.

California Trip

Just a huge thank you to everyone in California who made yet another years trip so special and fun. The gigs, craic and nonsense were second to none and big thanks again to Bruce for flying us about in his private plane and for the 13000 foot free fall sky dive. After escaping Alkatraz and Michael B's off side rule I arrived home on Friday to some lovely good old Scottish rain and some great local gigs to take me back down to earth. Big huge thanks again to you all. xxx

Everything you see (Out Now)!

Yo, Well the Runrig album was released on Monday entitled "Everything you see" and also has there new single "Clash of the Ash" on it. The album looks great although I do think they have photo shopped my legs off a snowman they are that white but brilliant never the less.

Big thanks to the guys for a great day out on Friday where we went on a wee cruise up Loch Ness for the press launch. When doing one of the interview's the lady commented live on air that "We had not yet seen the Loch Ness monster Gary,do you think he will surface today". I undid my belt and went to show her My wee Loch Ness monster haha. Her face was a picture :)

I hope you get out and buy it. Not only does it have your's truly on the front but the album is really brilliant and I wish the boys every success with it :)

Scotland's Strongman Final

My little brother Christopher aka (Goose) has just won the final of Scotland's Strongest Man 2007. The 10 finalists met this year in Fort William after a 10 year stay in Glenrothes for the first S.S.M.F event to be held in the Highlands. Goose started well and out of the 6 events he got 4 firsts a 2nd and a 3rd. This gave him a 13 point lead which meant he did not need to do the last event but he did and in style by lifting all 6 stones finishing with the 160kg over his head and to set the Nevis Centre on fire and to be the youngest winner ever. Absolutely over the moon and if any of you get a chance check out my video on bebo the moment he wins it by putting the 6th stone up.

Cheers, a very happy Gary :) x

Runrig Album Cover

Well I had a huge smile on my face when Mike from the Runrig office in Aberdeen phoned and asked if they could use a picture of me swinging my caman for the front cover of the bands new album called EVERYTHING YOU SEE. The album will be out this summer and the band are currently in the studio in Denmark recording what will surely be there classiest album yet hehe.

Big thanks to Runrig for using the picture and I'm sure it will sell millions,

Well maybe not now! :)

Kazakhstan 07

Hey folks, Just returned from Kazakhstan on the 31st Jan where we were playing for oil companies to raise money for a blind school which we opened when we were there and for an orphanage down in Mahambet which is where there famous kazak poet came from (our version of burns). We raised between the 2 events and other dates $111000 which is an incredible amount of money and well done to everyone who made it possible to make such a huge difference to so many lives.

We were also on local television twice and national once because of the nature of the trip which was great and we were treated like kings and queen's for 2 weeks.

So just a huge thanks again to Andy,Kevin,Colin,Mark,Rudi,Ian and many many more for your craic, drams stories and nonsense.

P.S If the drams are flying as much next year then the funds will be going towards a new liver for me! :)

Happy New Year

Happy New Year folks hope you all had a great Hogmanay where ever you spent it. We were playing in Drumnadrochit at the Loch Ness Hogmanay Party which was fantastic and a huge thanks to everyone who stayed out and partied so hard when the rain was telling you to get home and have a dram in front of the fire. 2006 has been another brilliant year for myself with the start of a new band Box Club, trips to USA Kazakhstan,China,Italy,France and lots more brilliant gigs at home in Scotland.

Winning the Premier League with the Shinty was a highlight for me also. This was the first time ever in Fort William's history that it was achieved. Representing the North of Scotland as Captain and our famous first victory in Croke Park against the Irish a few weeks ago will certainly keep me going if I'm ever bored driving to a gig.

Thank you to everyone who has come along to concerts, ceilidh's and the nonesense for the past year(s). Hope to see you all again in 2007 for some of the same fun that hopefully we have enjoyed together

Happy 2007..........Gary xx :)

Yeeehaa

Well what a weekend we had over in Ireland. We beat the Irish in Croke Park 19.11 and i managed to get 6 points for Scotland. I was given by BBC Radio Scotland a mini disc player and asked to document how i was feeling before and after the game with players thoughts and views in between which is getting aired on Sat morning(check tv/radio for details).

Only 2 weeks before we return to China and then straight into the studio with Box Club to record our first album. We are also delighted that the very best in the business Donna Cunningham of Firefly Productions is now our agent and i'm greatly looking forward to working with Donna and the girls in the office.

If you would like to listen to the show or listen back then click HERE and scroll down to Sports Weekly with John Beattie and forward the programme to 31mins. I think you will get a good laugh.

Croke Park (Dublin)

Hey folks

Flying out in the morning with the Scotland squad to Dublin for the yearly Shinty/Hurling International which takes place this year in Croke Park. Croke Park is Europe's second largest stadium holding over 90,000 when full. The Aussie rules Football, also against Ireland, is on after our game and at present 85,000 tickets have been sold for the double header event, which will be unbelievable to play in. I have also been asked by BBC Scotland to carry one of there Mini Disc player's to document the trip. They will edit and put the best bits on Radio Scotland on Sat 11th November.

I hope we kick ass :)

League Title

On Saturday 30th September 06 Fort William Shinty Club made history by winning the Premier League of Shinty for the very first time in 114 years. As you can imagine there were plenty of drams flying about on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon then received a phone call from the Scotland manager telling me that I was picked for the Scotland team where we will fly to Ireland this November for the yearly International which takes place in the awesome setting of Croke Park this year so all in all not a bad weekend.

P.s Big thanks to GMA Shinty Club who let me off playing at there yearly dance on Saturday night so I could celebrate with the boys after the game.

Camanachd Cup Final

Well it's that time of year again folks and we have managed to get back into the Camanachd Cup Final again which has been brilliant. After last years amazing win at home i think it will take something pretty special to beat it but we'll try. There is a programme on Friday 15th Sep(check tv/radio for details) which i did an interview on then the big final on Saturday in Dunoon this year which will be live on BBC 1. Hope you can all tune in from where ever you are and show your support. :)

California

Hey folks hope everyone is well and enjoying the sunshine we are getting just now. Heading off to California on Monday for 10 days playing and doing a bit of shinty coaching with the Californian Shinty Team aswell which will be brilliant so hopefully have some great photo's for ya when i get back. There may be a television crew following the trip also which would be a great laugh but that's not been confirmed yet so fingers crossed.

Got a pretty hectic summer ahead with some brilliant trips with the band to France and Italy and a week in Tunisia also so if you are phoning regarding bookings or enquiring then it may be easier to e-mail me as i will try and check them everyday and it also saves my phone bill too hehe :)

Box Club

Hey folks I'm lucky enough to be involoved in the new phenomenon that is Boxclub. The band consists of 4 Accordions which are myself, John Somerville, Angus Lyon and Mairearad Green, Duncan Lyall on Double Bass, Mike Bryan on Guitar and Martin O'Neill on Bodran/kit.

We have a tour in the Autumn which we are working on just now and most of the music is composed by ourselves or people that have influenced us in the music that we play. Don't worry I will be in touch soon with more details and more news on the tour.
